Before I go
Technically I’m on the road right now — well, I will be early tomorrow morning. But I saw this map right as I was going to bed and was kind of fascinated. It’s a structural map of the first Choose Your Own Adventure, a book called Sugarcane Island. I haven’t read it but it’s interesting to see how many paths the book encompasses. I count the shortest path to an ending at 5 passages (1 -> 3 -> 6 -> 12 -> 24 -> 48), and interestingly enough, you can go in an infinite loop — for some reason, passage 46 lets you go back to either 2 or 3.
The map is part of this article that examines different versions of the story, but it looks like the revisions were pretty minor.
The project I had considered doing after Tweebox was going to be called Twine, and it would generate maps like these for you from stories. Looking at this, though… I don’t know how an algorithm would be able to map this out in a way that people could grasp easily.
