Our little girl Susan is a most admirable slut, and pleases us mightily — Samuel Pepys, 1664
I don’t know why, but at random intervals over the past two weeks, I’ve thought to myself: “I wonder where that word came from.” Finally I got off my ass and found the Online Etymology Dictionary. I feel sort of bad about using it because my parents got me the OED as a graduation present and I really ought to use that instead, but it’s so much faster to switch to Firefox than to crack open a book.
It turns out for $10 you can sponsor a listing on the site. A little like those name-a-star services, but it’s interesting to browse the list of people who’ve already done it (notably the listing for ’slut’)… so tempting to carve out a little wordspace.
